three characteristics of an epic:
- Invocation to the muse or other deity,"Sing, Goddess, Achilles' rage..." line 2.
- use of patronymics "Daughter of Zeus!..." line 212.
- story begins in medias res "sons of arteus and greek heroes..." line 24
